Afternoon Tea Review: The Courthouse

Camille Allcroft tries the impressive afternoon tea offering at The Courthouse, Knutsford

With its impressive scale, The Courthouse, Knutsford immediately creates an impression of stately grandeur; this striking place was originally a crown court. Now, it’s the latest venture from independent hoteliers Flat Cap Hotels, who painstakingly restored the historic Grade II listed building before opening it as a hotel, restaurant and events venue.

The sophisticated surroundings make this the ideal spot for a leisurely afternoon tea, which is served with a choice of tea, coffee, champagne or cocktails and three tiers of sandwiches, scones and delicate cakes along with a glass of chilled Perrier Jouet left us feeling thoroughly spoiled.

Our treats are the work of Steven Tuke, Executive Chef of Barristers Restaurant and Bar. As well as afternoon tea, guests can feast on seasonal menus brimming with premium local ingredients; small plates sandwiches and mains at lunchtime and steaks, seafood and classics at dinner.

Popular signature dishes include duck liver brûlée with apricot chutney and black truffle, panna cotta of local Burt’s blue cheese and confit pork with sultana and pancetta black pudding.

The interiors here offer a blend of contemporary and original features, including modern art commissioned for the restaurant and wooden panelling which serves as a reminder of the original purpose of the building.

Soft furnishings, flickering candles and a spectacular domed ceiling conjure up an air of decadence to enjoy our afternoon tea, which is set to continue when the lavish rooftop garden opens soon – which will feature a champagne bar and an intriguing glass panel, where guests can view the former cells beneath.

A petite ten individually designed luxury hotel bedrooms are also set to open at The Courthouse initially, with a further forty to follow in 2018.

The verdict
The Courthouse is a welcome addition to the Cheshire restaurant, bar and hotel scene, it is clear Flat Cap Hotels have taken a great deal of care to preserve the charm of this unique location which successfully combines luxury with history – and the afternoon tea is just as splendid as the surroundings.
