Real adventurers will love the night dives and the KT12 torpedo boat destroyer wreck that lies offshore. Land of discovery There’s no shortage of things to see at Arbatax. Hop into one of the resort’s Jeeps for a day tour taking in traditional churches, a visit to meet a local potter, and a trip to the famous gorge of Sterru. History buffs will love the tour of Ogliastra, the eastern mountainous province of the island. Find ancient olive trees at the Santa Maria Navarese Park, sample traditional sheep cheese and prosciutto, sip locally-made wines and then visit Nurage – a huge megalithic archeological complex, once home to a distinct island civilisation. Head out to explore this diverse island on an old-fashioned train, picking it up at Tortoli and chugging along to centrally- located Barbagia di Seulo, where you’ll find some of Sardinia’s best caves at Janas. The whole island is riddled with an underground labyrinth of grottoes and caves – 300 open to visitors – a great place to be on a hot day. Beach chic Sardinia has some of the world’s most picturesque beaches, but Cala Goloritze is truly something special. Usually only accessible by sea, guests of Arbatax just need to take a gentle half-hour stroll down to the marble rock craggy coast to where freshwater springs meet the sea in order to discover a white stone beach that’s all theirs. A full-day tour aboard the resort’s chic wooden sailing boat reveals far-flung beaches and pretty coves up and down the coast – drop anchor to explore the beautiful Contessa cave and Sorgenti beach, and then enjoy a fresh seafood lunch on deck. Or sign up for the excursion to Venere’s Pool – a calm bay on the east coast, only about an hour away from the resort – where you can swim and marvel at the awe-inspiring red rock Sardinian coastline. A family affair As a family-friendly resort, Arbatax boasts buckets of entertainment for all ages.
