Ramen in Canary Wharf at Ippudo

Aka Vegetarian, Ippudo London
When you’re looking for a hurried bite, Ippudo’s long albeit quickly dissipating line and simple menu of tried and tested dishes sets the precedent in the otherwise crowded banking district. It is conveniently located in Canary Wharf’s newest shopping centre – Crossrail Place and packed with friendly neighbours and tourists alike.

Founded as an independent ramen restaurant in Japan in 1985 by Shigemi Kawahara, Ippudo today has over one twenty restaurants across thirteen different countries. They serve bowl after bowl of authentic ramen around the world including Sydney, Singapore, Hong Kong and Manhattan, and now in London across two locations.

The menu is to the point – Hakata-style pork belly (tonkotsu pork broth) ramen with an option to go classic or choose from modern seasoning variations such as garlic oil and their secret house-style spicy miso paste (Umamidama). The vegetarian option comes with no compromise – a rich, umami-packed seaweed and mushroom broth is topped with fried tofu. Both the pork and the veg options come with freshly made noodles that are topped with kikurage (cloud ear) mushrooms, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts and spring onions. If that didn’t satisfy your ramen buds, you can add a poached egg on top.

Wash down the salty ramen, with a bottle of chilled sake if you want to go down the authentic route. The waiters will be happy to take your preference and make a suggestion. Other libations include Japanese whiskey, beer and cocktails, Shochu, and a classic selection 0f wines.

Note: Ippudo does not take reservations. But luckily the lines don’t last very long.
