Devouring Madeleine Shaw’s afternoon tea at the prestigious Brown’s Hotel, will satisfy indulgent cravings and leave you feeling guilt-free, says Alice Griffiths.
Celebrated wellness chef Madeleine Shaw’s creative menu allows you to see off those January blues in style, and eating healthily at the same time. Her invigorating afternoon-tea menu, wittily entitled “Tea-tox”, is jam packed with nutritious treats and a generous helping of delicious flavour.
Located in the heart of Mayfair, Brown’s Hotel is wonderfully elegant but without a hint of stuffiness that might be expected of the prestigious address and it’s five star rating. The classic English Tea Room is opulent, furnished with plush maroon seating that invites you to cuddle up for an hour or two.
With the resident pianist tinkling the ivories it’s easy to get lost in the moment and see like Royalty. It’s everything you would expect from a five star tea venue, with a spoonful of more.
Although inspired by the traditional afternoon-tea, the Tea-tox is anything but and goes above and beyond the norm. When the tea is served, the first thing you’ll notice is the abundance of colour. The vivid purples, greens and yellows of the the refreshing lemongrass and ginger brew is just what you need to brighten up your gloomy January!
Say good-bye to sandwiches with the crusts cut off, you wont find any of that here. From miso glazed salmon to beetroot crepes and cauliflower couscous, the adventurous savoury creations present an exciting combination of flavours.
The addition of seasonal fruit served with yoghurt and oats is surprisingly refreshing, who need scones when you can eat fruit as good as this. Good things comes to those who wait and saving the best till last the dessert plate offers gluten free raspberry and pistachio brownies and white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake.
The star of the show was the Coconut ‘wanna-cotta’ with zesty lemon curd – the creamy texture is heavenly. This is a very different afternoon tea experience and it just goes to show you don’t have to overindulge in sugar to feel treated and well fed.
