Northcote: A Magnificent Obsession

Get together 21 passionate chefs with 17 Michelin stars between them and you’ve got one very special event, as Carole Hamilton discovers

I’ll start with an apology, Obsession 18 is over for this year. To ensure you don’t miss Obsession 19, put a reminder into your diary now because, if you love food, this is one culinary celebration you won’t want to miss.

Obsession first took place in 2001, dreamed up by chef Nigel Haworth at Northcote as a way to celebrate great food, great wine and great cooking. And it just keeps growing with food fans making the two-week event a sell-out and chefs from around the world keen to add to the list of luminaries who have joined Nigel and executive chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen in their kitchen.

In its 18th year, the line-up of chefs who’ve made the trip to Lancashire is impressive. From home-grown talent such as Heston Blumenthal, Phil Howard, Sat Bains, Jason Atherton, Theo Randall and Tom Kerridge to worldwide culinary greats from Australia, Japan, California, Mexico and all across Europe.

“Nigel is justifiably proud of their success, “We’re bringing different styles of cooking, different cultures and different flavours to Northcote for both our guests and our kitchen team to experience. Sharing ideas has got to be one of the most important and inspirational things we can do in cookery and we’re in a privileged position that the Obsession chefs are open to sharing their ideas with us.”

If you don’t want to wait until next January, sample Northcote’s Michelin-star five-course gourmet menu (£75 a head) or seven-course tasting menu (£95 a head). A gourmet break including half a bottle of Louis Roederer Brut Premier champagne, a five-course gourmet menu, overnight stay and breakfast starts from £375 per couple. If you really want to spoil yourself ask about one of the new Garden Lodge Rooms, which are sumptuous.
