Charlotte Ellis enjoys live music alongside some good food and great cocktails in Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf’s new waterside restaurant is a little gem, away from the corporate grey hustle bustle and chain joints of the City outpost, (Crossharbour is actually the closest station) Jazzgir is a 1920s-inspired joint offering up inventive cocktails, a small but well-formed Mediterranean mash-up menu and live music – every single night.

Every evening, there’s a different band/singer/artiste (find all details here) with jazz, swing, soul, blues, funk, and a little bit of modern in the mix too – making the perfect addition to any evening.

Whether you want to sit bar side for a nibble and cocktail and to appreciate the music or you want to reserve a table to dine; a Charcuterie, vegetable, or cheese platter will set you back £25 (£20 for the veggies) which may sound steep, but an abundance of Daniele Ham DOP, Bresaola IGP, Spicy Spianata, Salami Rustico – for the meat aficionados – is enough to satisfy a small family. How impressive can a veggie platter be – I hear you cry; if you’re partial to a chickpea/aubergine/zucchini served multiple ways, five variations of olive and fluffy focaccia this one’s for you.

The menu offers up six fish, six meat and six veggie options. The Octopus carpaccio with chilli, spring onion lime and Champagne was fresh and actually a great accompaniment to the Triple M cocktail (Stoli Red Vodka, Ginger Beer, Grapefruit Juice, Fresh lime juice, Angostura bitters and Rosemary). Other highlights are grilled squid, wild seabass and a crab taglioni.

While for meat lovers, a classic rib eye steak (£25), rabbit ragu pappardelle (£15) and Veal meatballs (£9) give a nice variety. For the veggie/vegans a couple of holier than thou salads, a pasta dish and caponata also make for delicious lighter lunch options.

Jazgir is no doubt set to be the venue for many upcoming Christmas party, twinkly romantic dinner date or client lunch meeting for the surrounding businesses. Jazzgir is now taking bookings for group x-mas parties, with a set menu from £30 (for a minimum of 10 people).
