This summer, the National Theatre’s River Stage festival returns once again for five free weekends of exciting entertainment accompanied by a host of delicious food and drink pop-ups on the South Bank.
Launching on 28th July and welcoming Londoners and visitors alike, Thames-side performances at the River Stage festival will run long into the summer evenings with weekend events curated by some of the UK’s most recognised music festivals and internationally renowned arts organisations.
Expect an eclectic combination of theatre, DJ’s, delicious pop-ups, outdoor cinema and the very best in live music acts…
Brisket and Bird
This trendy new street food offering hits the South Bank with a bang this summer in its bespoke trailer inspired by a classic American airstream. Indulge on slow cooked beef brisket baps, Asian style pulled chicken and chicken salt fries whilst you soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the River Stage Festival.
Following the tremendous success of the NT’s 2016 Apothecary Cocktail bar and its bottled botanical cocktails, Apothecary returns in 2017 to the River Stage festival with a brand new look. Taking inspiration from the melting pot of 80s New York counterculture, Apothecary is a hidden watering hole serving up nostalgic craft creations throwing guests straight back to the dirty glamour of downtown NYC.
The menu will feature original home-crafted cocktails including single serves and sharers inspired by the culture and icons of the era. New on the menu will be draught beer featuring the NT’s favourite local breweries and some special appearances from the USA. Apothecary will also be offering a menu around the gin Collins and classic G&T. These feature alongside a range of botanical and bitters pairings.
The Green Room Garden Bar
Back again in association with independent London craft spirit distillers, Sipsmith, The Green Room Garden Bar will transform the Green Room’s expansive urban garden into an urban oasis of summer drinking and dining. New for this year to further emulate the lush green space there will be a living wall of fresh herbs and flowers, maintained by The Bank Side Open Spaces Trust. On the menu expect to find draught wines and lager and a selection of delicious Sipsmith cocktails accompanied by lip smacking juicy burgers and fries.
You’ll also find a range of French wines on draught at The Green Room Garden Bar by Mas de La Source alongside a newly launched English wine, Lyme Bay Sandbar, exclusive to the NT and available on tap.
The Understudy Container Bar
If you’re looking for a delicious range of craft beers then head on down to The Understudy Container Bar throughout the River Stage Festival. This year the Understudy is partnering with Anspach & Hobday in their biggest project to date to offer pale ales and craft beer. The partnership has already generated three collaborative brews that launched to coincide with iconic plays shown at the NT.
The partnership at The Understudy Container Bar launches alongside Anspach & Hobday’s collaborative brew with L’Ermitage, a brand new brewery from Brussels. Container Bar will pour the brew on tap and by the bottle.
Capitalising on the trend for cold brew coffee throughout the summer months, Espresso Bar has a new range of innovative summer drinks, both soft and alcoholic. Why not try Cold Brew with Cointreau or a Vietnamese Iced Coffee with Kahula?
In addition to the new food pop-ups open throughout the River Stage Festival, the NT welcomes back its much-loved pizza and ice cream vans and the Aperitivo Bar, serving up a host of delicious and refreshing cocktails.
There’s something for everyone to enjoy at the NT’s food and drink pop-ups on the South Bank, whether you’re enjoying bottled cocktails from Apothecary at the WOMAD Festival weekend, Brisket & Bird’s beef buns at the Rambert or craft beers whilst enjoying music from HOME, the River Stage Festival promises to be a hit in 2017.
